Peak, Tram, and Night Out

We started the day off by taking a trolley car up to the "Peak" of the mountain overlooking the city, where we hiked around the top of the peak in a circle, giving us views of most of the island of Hong Kong and Kowloon across the narrow bay (mainland) - spectacular views of the city for miles. There is some air polution here and there hadn't been any big rain or wind to drive off the smog, so our visibility was not as we would have liked, but still amazing (we will get a postcard of the view on a sunny clear day).

After a great meal of Sushi and ostrich overlooking the city, we headed back down and walked through Hong Kong Park, nestled amongst the sky scrapers on the side of the mountain. It was a beautiful walk, and we particularly enjoyed the giant aviary within the park, which had 100s of different birds to view in a natural setting.

After the park, we were tired of all the walking, so we jumped on a tram (narrow double decker but powered by above electrical wires) and took it from one side of the city and back on one of the main East-West roads (Queensway - different street names along the way) and got to really see the whole city from an intresting vantage point. We particularly liked the west-side dry foods market with all the open shops that people (and obviously businesses) come to get their dried goods (pasta, grains, nuts, fish, and everything else you can think of).

After going West, we came back going East and got off the tram at Victoria Park (remember 100 years of British influence). The park was very large and really the only large flat playground type area that we saw anywhere in the city, complete with a track, basketball courts and so forth. Drake and Logan you would have loved the soccer courts where they were playing a version of Futsal.

We made our way pack to Jeff and Janie's hotel (44th floor of Conrad) for a bit of down time before heading out to the "American Peking" resturaunt on Lockhart road where we met up with Katy, Gary, and a couple of their friends for a large, multidish, family style chinese meal - and a lot of beer. Before we went into the restaurant (a little early) we quickly realized the nature of the street, bars and other activities. Does an Asian Sailor's port get the meaning acorss.

During dinner we had a great time enjoying every bite and laugh and then afterward headed across the street to pub for an after dinner beer. You know our Irish host! The girls all decided to head home while Gary, Jeff, and Dave went out on the strip. As previously mentions there were lots of bars and resturaunts. It was not far from where the US military ships dock. Very interesting experience with the young sailors getting their fill - to get the idea, think red garter multifold. Hmmm, I think we got home at 2:30 am and we will leave it at that! :) Another great day in HK and on the Clemow Asian Adventure!!
